Trafalgar Day at the Black Country Living Museum

October 2023

8 Sea Cadet units make up Mercia District. The units spread from Telford through the Black Country and into Birmingham where three units complete our number. Warwickshire – our sister District complements the SCC presence within the Authorities area with three more Units.

The District commemorated one of the biggest events of our calendar in October – Trafalgar Day – with a District parade at the Black Country Living Museum. With Dudley unit hosting and parading it’s Colour, over 200 Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, complete with musical accompaniment from both South Staffordshire Wing RAF Cadet band and Mercia’s brand new District Band demonstrated to the public just what young people really can do – an amazing day and as a bonus the sun shone all day.

The District senior team that support the fantastic work of our Cadets and volunteers has recently been appointed and is working hard to ensure that all of our units immerse themselves in the good work that YOU WM lead and facilitate.

The recent Leadership Event gave us another good reason to showcase what we do outside our usual avenues. Cadets from a number of Units made up the cohort that prepared and participated in our leadership stand. As well as showcasing our organisation, this event builds on the leadership skills that we as an organisation strive to develop in our young people as an integral part of our Cadet Training Programme.

Looking forward, the District is busy currently preparing for 2024, and looking forward to the host of competitions, regattas, training courses, afloat training and of course social events, we hope to more deeply embed both YOU WM and other youth organisations in what we do as we move forward.
